Schalke fired head coach Manuel Baum and re-appointed veteran Huub Stevens to replace him. The Royal Blues are in an unprecedented series of 28 games in the Bundesliga without a win in the history of the club, and since the beginning of this season they have taken only 4 points from 12 games. On Wednesday, Schalke lost 0:2 to Freiburg at home, which turned out to be the last match for Baum at the head of the team.
Baum, 41, has been at the helm of Schalke for less than three months. He was appointed head coach on September 30th in place of David Wagner, who was fired after just two rounds. For the 67-year-old Stevens, this will be his fourth time at the helm of the team that won the 1997 UEFA Cup. The Dutchman is tasked with winning the upcoming championship match with Arminia Bielefeld over the weekend, as well as the match analyzed by questions for football tipsters with Ulm for the German Cup on Tuesday.
The absolute record for matches without a victory in the German Bundesliga is held by the team of Tasmania Berlin, which failed to win in 31 consecutive matches in the 1965/66 season. Huub Stevens led Schalke between 1996 and 2002, from September 2011 to December 2012, and from March to July 2019.
